How Does a Lightning Arrestor Work ?

A lightning arrester system is a device that is used to safeguard the equipment at substations from travelling waves. In simple terms, lightning arresters deflect the abnormal high voltages to base, without breaking up the power force’s durability. It’s connected to the earth and the line. There are several type of lightning arrester.

Types of lightning arrester :-

The following are the most widely utilized types of lightning arrester:

  • Road Gap Arrester:
    This type of lightning arrester ‘s design is clear and uncomplicated. There is an air gap between the ends of the two rods in this type of Arrester. This Arrester’s air gap setting is adjusted such that it breaks before any harm is done to it. When the voltage on the line is high there is a spark in the distance and the surplus current flows to the earth.
  • Sphere Gap Arrester: 

Air distances are presented in two separate places in this type of lightning arrester. One sphere is attached to the line, while the other is tethered to the ground. The gap between these two locations is kept as low as possible. A suffocating coil is passed between the transformer’s phase windings and linked to the sphere line.

  • Horn Gap Arrester:

This type of lightning arrester  are constructed of horn-shaped metal parts. Which is separated by a very thin layer of air. And each line is placed such that it remains closed between the ground.

  •  Arrester with Multiple Gaps:

This stype of lightning arrester  is made up of a succession of little metal cylinders. Which are separated from one another by air and are insulated from one another.

Whose first cylinder is linked to the line and whose final and next in series cylinders are connected to the earthing.

  •    Electrolytic Arrester: 

These type of lightning arrester  only have a high discharge capacity. It operates by depositing a thin strip of aluminium hydroxide on the electrolyte that is entirely immersed in the aluminium plates. The plate provides strong resistance at a low cost but with a set value. 

 

  • Expulsion Type Lightning Arrester:

This type of lightning arrester  improves the distance of the rod at which it turns off the frequency of electricity. This air raster employs a fibre tube that effectively separates the spark gap and the interrupted spark gap within the fibre tube

  •  Auto valve Arrester:  This type of lightning arrester r is made up of numerous flat mesh discs set on top of one another and separated by thin mica rings. The disc content is not uniform, and admin content has been added. the glow discharge occurs in the material’s capillaries, and the voltage reduces to around 350 volts per unit.

  • Valve type Lightning Arresters: 

This type of lightning arrester  is used in higher powerful electrical systems. These devices are made up of two major components: a series of spark gaps and a series of non-linear resistor discs. When a high voltage spark strikes the gusset and the non-linear resistors have a grounding voltage, these devices can work.
